Did You Know?

Ayurveda is the oldest known system of natural medicine in the world. It is said that the basic principles were established thousands of years ago by wise sages who got direct guidance from the gods.

What is Ayurveda?

Ayurveda is a form of traditional medicine that originated in India more than 5,000 years ago. The focus of Ayurveda is to restore balance between the body, mind, and spirit. This can be done through the use of a wholesome diet, exercise, and regular cleansing of the body. Ayurveda is an alternative medicine that is used by people throughout the world to prevent and treat health conditions. It also is used to simply promote a balanced perspective on the world, which can help to alleviate stress and other mental health afflictions.

The principles of Ayurveda are centered around the doshas. The doshas describe the makeup of our bodies, and they are composed of the elements of air, fire, space, water, and earth. The elements, in certain combinations, form one of three doshas known as either the vata, kapha, or pitta dosha. Vata dosha is made up of air and space. People who are dominated by the vata dosha are thin and intelligent. Kapha dosha is made up of the elements earth and water. Those with kapha dosha are relaxed and have a solid frame. People dominated by pitta dosha have quick tempers, as pitta dosha is made up of fire and water.

When your dosha is imbalanced, it can disrupt your energy flow. This leads to physical and mental problems. Each dosha has characteristic problems that occur when it is out of balance. For example, people with vata dosha are prone to anxiety and people with pitta dosha are at risk for heart disease if their dosha is out of balance.

Keeping your doshas in balance

There are a number of Ayurvedic supplements that can be used to keep your doshas in balance. A popular Ayurvedic supplement is known as a churna. Churnas are powders that are created by blending together several herbs spices known to play a role in balancing doshas. They are added to food dishes not only to improve taste but to also elicit the healing qualities of the foods you are eating.

The herbs used in Ayurveda have potent medicinal effects in and of themselves. Ginger is an example of an herb widely used in Ayurveda that has a potent taste but also aids in the digestive process and relaxes the stomach. Turmeric is another Ayurvedic spice that can lower cholesterol, improve immune function, and detoxify the liver.

There are a wide variety of Ayurvedic supplements. Their effects are widespread and various, with some being designed to increase weight loss and others designed to aid in detoxification. With all Ayurvedic supplements, however, the goal is the same: to promote a unity of body, mind and spirit. This balance is the core component of Ayurveda. When it is not achieved, then we experience many of the modern afflictions that are so common in our society today.

Ayurveda is growing in popularity because many westerners are beginning to recognize that the methods used in it are time-tested and valid. In the coming years, it's likely more and more people will turn to Ayurveda to help them find balance in their mental and physical lives.
